Felix Scholars reception
On the 3rd June 2010 a reception for
the Felix Scholars was held at the Divinity School, Oxford. This
event brought together the scholars from all three Universities,
Oxford, Reading and SOAS. Below are reports of the evening kindly
provided by a few of the scholars
Mr Nelson Oppong, MPhil, Oxford 2009/2010
I have always longed for a platform to interact with fellow Felix
scholars as well as the drivers behind the scholarship. This was
largely achieved by the reception that was held at the Divinity
Schools on 3rd June. The feeling of being part of a broad network
of people united by a common ambition - the pursuit and promotion
of higher learning and research made possible by the Felix
Scholarship's magnanimous offer - was very useful. The event was
organised in a manner that facilitated both formal and informal
interactions with faculty, Felix Scholars as well as administrators
from Oxford, SOAS and Reading. After the reception I felt more
challenged to match the commitment show by the Felix Trust with a
commitment of my own to contribute toward society in whatever form.
I think we must have more of such events, especially with past
scholars. This will further deepen the sense of comradeship among
Felix scholars.
Mr Jared Mcdonald, MPhil/PhD History, SOAS
2009/2010
The Felix Scholars of SOAS had the
pleasure of travelling to Oxford for the Felix Reception in June
this year. After a short meet and greet at one of Oxford's
well-known 'watering holes', we were taken on a walking tour of the
university town by fellow Felix Scholars from Oxford. The warm
afternoon weather only added to the experience, which allowed us to
get to know each other a bit better before attending the reception
itself. Following a few speeches and some finger snacks and drinks,
there were more opportunities to mingle with Felix Scholars from
Reading and Oxford, as well as their supervisors and other
stakeholders. The evening was finished off with a fascinating tour
of the world famous Bodleian Library.
Mr Siddharth Arora, DPhil Mathematics, Oxford
2008/2009
The Felix reception this year was hosted at the beautiful Divinity
School in Oxford. I look forward to attending this reception in
order to have a chance to meet new scholars, and reconnect with
scholars and faculty members from other Universities. I have made
some wonderful friends at the reception, and it is truly heartening
to see the growing number of Felix scholars from different
nationalities. The speeches given at the reception were very
inspiring, which I think were the highlight of the day. I look
forward to attending the next Felix reception, and welcome the
Felix scholars joining in the next academic year.
Ms Aparajita Mukhopadhyay,
PhD History, SOAS 2009/2010
The annual reception for Felix
Scholars was held on 3rd June at University of Oxford. It was an
informal occasion which allowed scholars to interact with one
another. The Felix scholars from University of Oxford arranged a
pre- reception 'walk' to familiarize scholars from other
Universities with their Alma Mater and it was an unique opportunity
to explore Oxford with insider knowledge and insight. The high
point of the evening was the address to the students by members of
the Felix Committee. The evening was pleasant and enjoyable.
Mr Usha Rathinam, PhD International Rural Development,
Reading 2009/2010
It's my immense pleasure to thank
Felix trust for this wonderful get-together of all the three
university Felix scholars, supervisors and Felix trust members. I
really feel such a meeting is important in this tight schedule of
studies, not only for refreshing but also to share different people
thoughts and interests. I was unaware of so many Felix scholars and
this meeting paved a way to get to know them. We shared our views,
opinions and idea about our research subject, university campus and
also about the city where we live. I also felt home when i saw so
many students from my own country. I came to know more about the
trust and its importance of this scholarship more clearly after
hearing the trust member's speech.
Apart from this we had a good walk around the oxford campus, which
made me to wonder about the ancient infrastructure. The building
speaks the beauty of the university. We also had visited the
library which was awesome. I was really surprised to see the number
of books, the way it was structured and functioned. I enjoyed the
food and drink which was so rich and good. Ultimately the overall
trip was informative as well as enjoyable.
Ms Mehjabeen Jagmag, MA
Social Anthropology of Development, SOAS 2009/2010
The Oxford Reception earlier this
year was a wonderful experience. Brilliant, sunny weather, the
beautiful Bodelian Library and the company of our friends from
Reading and Oxford made it a great evening.
